Rebecca Cheptegei: Funeral of Ugandan Olympian killed by ex-partner takes place

Outpouring of grief as family, friends and fellow athletes bid farewell to murdered runner

The funeral of Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, who was killed by her ex-partner, has taken place in her hometown of Kapchorwa.

Cheptegei, 28, was stabbed to death in her home in Kampala on August 16. Her ex-partner, Benjamin Kiplagat, has been charged with her murder.

The funeral was attended by family, friends, fellow athletes and government officials.

Cheptegei's death has sent shockwaves through Uganda, and has sparked outrage over the issue of violence against women.

During the funeral service, Cheptegei's father, Paul Chemonges, said that he was "heartbroken" by his daughter's death.

"She was a kind and loving person, and she didn't deserve to die this way," he said.

Cheptegei's coach, Addy Ruiter, said that she was a "talented and dedicated athlete".

"She had a bright future ahead of her, and her death is a tragic loss," he said.

Cheptegei's death has highlighted the issue of violence against women in Uganda.

According to the Uganda Police Force, there were 1,645 cases of femicide in the country in 2021.

Activists say that the government needs to do more to address the issue of violence against women.

"We need to change the attitudes that lead to violence against women," said Sarah Kagingo, a women's rights activist.

"We need to teach men that violence is never the answer, and we need to provide support for women who are victims of violence."

Cheptegei's death is a reminder of the urgent need to address the issue of violence against women in Uganda.

The government and civil society organizations need to work together to create a more just and equitable society for all women.
